So we stood there, over the Puget Sound, staring north, talking about whether we were all seeing this hazy and vaguely greenish band maybe 20° above the horizon. It could have been a cloud, or light pollution. But we all saw it, and after a few minutes, it seemed to be getting bigger. It wasn't very impressive, so we thought about calling a taxi, but I requested that we hold out a while longer. The aurora forecast was saying it was definitely going to be in viewing range.
After standing there and watching it form for about half an hour, it happened. It started to shimmer, to suddenly bulge and glow a little brighter before dying back and nearly fading, and coming back again. It moved up and down, and slowly seemed to move closer and get bigger. After a few minutes
